Scripture uses sleep as a symbol of death, but also as a negative symbol of laziness. In other words, spiritual sleep is much more dangerous than dozing off in a moving vehicle, because you endanger not just your body or your life, but your eternal soul. That's why Paul told the Christians in Rome, "it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed." (Romans 13:11) In just one moment life as we know it could all be over, and eternity is too long to be wrong. Are you alert, or are you asleep?
