Stirred (2020)
Peter’s first letter was written “to the strangers scattered” (1 Peter 1:1) throughout five Roman provinces, and now he follows up with a second letter to the same group. Not much time has elapsed since his first letter, but the situation in these churches has already drastically changed. The challenge this time around is that opposition to the saints is not coming from the world, but from those who say they are part of the church! They still profess to know Jesus, but they have departed from the doctrine and the godly lifestyle taught by the Apostles. And now, they are trying to influence others in the church to follow them in their backsliding, by questioning and even attacking the teaching of the elders. It is a treacherous time, and that’s why Peter wants to “STIR UP” the church (2 Peter 3:1). He wants the saints to remember what they have been taught, because there are so many critical, cynical voices everywhere around them, questioning everything about their doctrine and lifestyle. Peter reminds them that, to be prepared for the FUTURE, we must remember the PAST.
