Tucked away in the ancient Hebrew songbook known as Psalms is a well-worn section called “Shiray Hammaloth” - Songs of Ascent. The fifteen songs in this section are the Psalms numbered 120 through 134, and they were sung (most likely in sequence) by pilgrims as they travelled up to the city of Jerusalem for the three great annual worship feasts on the Jewish calendar. Topographically, Jerusalem was the highest city in the country, so no matter where they travelled from, each worshipper and their family had to both literally and spiritually ascend to God’s house.

In an age when our own busyness conspires against bringing our house to God’s house, never has church attendance been more important. We too are pilgrims traveling upward, and there are some benefits and blessings that we only experience as we ascend in company with other believers. That’s precisely why God commands his church to consistently gather together, especially as we see His return approaching (Hebrews 10:25). This six-part midweek series explores the critical importance of your church family in your own spiritual journey.
